Many of the world’s poorest people depend for their daily needs on natural ecosystems such as forests and wetlands. Yet in many southern regions these ecosystems are under pressure, threatening the livelihoods of those who are already vulnerable.
To deal with this predicament, three organisations – Friends of the Earth Netherlands, the IUCN Netherlands Committee and the World Wide Fund for Nature Netherlands – have joined forces within the collaborative programme natureandpoverty*.
Due to the complementarity of the three organisations and their extensive international networks, the natureandpoverty* programme offers a significant potential for addressing poverty from an ecosystem approach. On this website you can read more about the programme and the regions and themes it addresses.
From the 5th until the 13th of May, three members of the Dutch Parliament, Henk Jan Ormel (CDA), Tineke Huizinga (ChristenUnie) and Boris Dittrich (D66) have visited Kalimantan on the invitation of the natureandpoverty* programme. The visit had the intention to enable the MP's to gain knowledge of the impacts of palm oil production and logging and the effect these economic activities have on the livelihoods of local people.
